Abstract:
Based on the field surveys on the mangrove flora in Thi Nai Lagoon, 37 mangrove species belongs to 20 families have been identified including 20 true mangrove species (54% of the total 37 true mangrove species in Vietnam) and 17 associate mangrove species. The mangrove flora in this area is very diversified comprising the species found in both Southern and Northern Vietnam.
With a very small number of individuals dispersedly along the ponds, the mangrove ecosystems are not able to play a role in natural disaster control, supply of organic humus and breeding and living places for aquatic species. The mangrove ecosystems in this area tend to deteriorate and are gradually deprived of true mangrove species that have existed for hundreds of years due to human impacts, particularly the conversion of mangroves into shrimp ponds. It is therefore of great urgence to work out action plans/policies on protection, caring and development of the present remaining mangroves found in Thi Nai Lagoon.
