Biodiversity planning is an essential tool to manage the conservation system of a nation. To achieve the goal of conservation and sustainable development of biodiversity set out by the Biodiversity Law, the Biodiversity Conservation Department is coordinating with the
Vietnam Association for Nature Conservation and Environmental Protection to establish a
“Master Planning Framework for National Biodiversity Conservation up to 2020”.
This paper presents a draft framework and it includes two parts. Part One introduces general rules, and regulations. Planning views, objectives, criteria and processes are also presented in this part. Part Two provides details of the master plan for biodiversity conservation in
Vietnam. It also presents an assessment of the current classification of the conservation system and an overview of the existing issues in biodiversity planning in Vietnam. The paper tries to set out classification criteria for a master plan for Vietnam’s conservation system based on
the Biodiversity Law. Recommendations for effective planning of Vietnam’s biodiversity conservation up to 2020 are also presented in the paper.
