Abstract:
The Cuu Long River delta with area of about 4 million ha, has many types of inland water bodies such as large rivers and their tributaries, channel, pond, wet rice, swamp, peat-swamp... Species composition of invertebrate in the fresh waters of the delta is insufficiently studied. Up to now, there are 98 species of crustacean, 62 species of mollusk, 24 species of polychaete, 16 species of olygochaete, 83 species of rotifer, 24 families of insect larvae and 161 species of protozoan in the fresh waters of the delta. However, some other groups of invertebrate are unknown. The diversity of freshwater invertebrate is more expressed in abundance of genus than species.
Features of the invertebrate fauna in fresh inland waters of the delta are characterized by principal factors as follows: 1) The fauna is typical tropical for flat landscape in the delta; and 2) Species composition including species close to India-Malaysian zoogeographical region.
Some factors impacted to diversity of fresh water invertebrate in the delta such as exchange of function of wetland ecosystems into secondary one for different purposes are also given and remarked in this paper.
