Abstract:
DaKrong is a newly established Nature Reserve and is the only protected area in Quang Tri. The main objectives of the study are to confirm the present of gaur, assess population status and identify threats to gaur in Da Krong.
The results of the study have confirmed that there is only one herd of gaur of about 4-6 individuals in DaKrong Nature Reserve. The findings reveal the alarming information that the population of this herd was reducing from 10-19 to 4-6 individuals within eight years time. Furthermore, the habitat of this herd is limited in a small area. The information on gaur population in the Nature Reserve is significant, because this is the last gaur herd in Quang Tri province, especially in the eastern part of Truong Son Mountain Range.
The gaur population in DaKrong is isolated without any connection to other gaur population. This could be a future cause of inbreed. In addition, habitat degradation and illegal hunting might put the population of the gaur on the brink of extinction.
