DaKrong protected area is one of the biodiversity hot spots in the central Truong Son range of Vietnam. Together with the diversity of ecosystems including forests, limestone, and wetlands, the area also contents high value of species richness. Among identified species, 77 species are listed in Vietnam Red Data Book, 47 species are in IUCN Red Data Book, and 41 species are listed in Decree No. 48CP. Many rare and endangered plant and animal species were defined.
The protected area is also an important watershed for Quang Tri as well as recreational, educational and scientific research area. The area plays a vital role as green corridor to link Bach Ma - Hai Van, Bach Ma National Park, Phong Dien Protected Area with Phong Nha - Ke Bang, Vu Quang, Pu Mat as well as Dong Phu Rieng and Hin Nam No of Laos.
Beside achievement in conservation and management efforts, the protected area is still facing many difficulties and challenges. Development of appropriate conservation and management plan for the protected area is critical.
