Abstract:
Urban (Hanoi city) wastewater has been used for vegetable farming in Bang B village in particular and in Thanh Tri peril-urban of Hanoi in general. The concentration of some heavy metals in wastewater is lower than the permissible level, but coliform is many times higher. Average annual volume of wastewater pumped into Bang B vegetable field is about 700,000 m3, this leading to a high accumulation of heavy metals and nutrients in soil and water in vegetable fields. The concentration of some metals like Cd, Pb and Hg in almost vegetable samples is lower than the permissible (FAO/WHO standard). The concentration of As in 11/21 vegetable samples is higher than the permissible level (standard of WHO/FAO and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development). The concentration of As in 7/21 vegetable samples is higher than the permissible level set by the Ministry of Public Health. The concentration of As in aquatic vegetables is much higher than that in dry-vegetables. Bang B vegetables are also contaminated by coliform with the concentration of some hundred thousands to million MPN/100 ml.
