Abstract: In French, a composite verb is normally formed with one of the auxiliary verbs “AVOIR” and “ETRE”. Most of these verbs are with “AVOIR”, and only 0,3% are with “ETRE”. From general remark on the function of AVOIR and ETRE as significative verbs, this article analyses the role of these words as auxiliary verbs in forming grammatical meaning of verbs in past composite tense. Given the particularity of the function of each verb, each auxiliary verb above will have different influences to the grammatical meaning of the sentence, and consequently may make the sentence carry different meanings.
