<title>English today and tomorrow from a critical perspective</title>

<summary type="text">English today and tomorrow from a critical perspective

Doing any critical analysis with English and English Language Teaching (ELT) requires&#13;
a critical examination of the language and related matters. First, the English language has a long&#13;
history of evolution and people all over the world have been speaking English as a first language,&#13;
second language or an important foreign language. The United Kingdom, its former colonies and&#13;
the United States of America are the starting points of the popular diffusion of English language.&#13;
Thus, they are either native speakers of English or competent English users. Secondly, nowadays,&#13;
English is used as an effective tool in various situations of international communication with&#13;
various "world Englishes". It also means there are different standards of English, including&#13;
metropolitan native norms and other local or regional norms. Last but not least, ELT, like other&#13;
kind of teaching, is not free from political connotations. We should recognize the political nature of&#13;
ELT for our actions. This paper presents a brief discussion of the present use of English and the&#13;
growing tendency of this language use. It also looks at the teaching of English language as a political&#13;
undertaking. On the ground, some ideas may be offered for a more in-depth critical analysis.

The article focuses on the folowing issues: analyzing the typical syntax contexts of&#13;
verbs of speech with the meaning of direct information, indicating the internal and external&#13;
objects and the ways to show them in Russian and Vietnamese. The results collected through&#13;
analysis are contributed in confirming the accuracy of the hypotheses about the objective existence&#13;
of the internal and external objects of this verbal group in our communication and fully reflecting&#13;
their features in the language.

La formation des jeunes en langues étrangères est actuellement l’objet de&#13;
nombreuses rénovations. Apprendre une langue étrangère suppose que l’apprenant doit faire face&#13;
aux situations de communication interculturelle. Dans la vie quotidienne, les variations existent à&#13;
tous les niveaux communicatifs concernant toutes les composantes de la compétence&#13;
communicative. Dans une interaction interculturelle, elles peuvent causer des malentendus voire&#13;
des chocs culturels. Quel est le rôle de la culture dans l’histoire de l’enseignement du français&#13;
langue étrangère? Comment envisager la place de l’interculturel dans une classe de langue?&#13;
Comment mettre en place une formation des apprenants de langue étrangère à l'interculturel qui&#13;
soit pertinente et efficace? Quels projets de recherche peuvent être montés pour répondre aux&#13;
exigences de telle formation ?C’est ceque nous allons ici présenter.

Intonation is important for learners of English because even with satisfactory&#13;
consonants and vowels, a phrase/sentence with an incorrect intonation contour may change the&#13;
intended meaning of the whole utterance. This study, basing its observation and formulation on&#13;
earlier publications, will briefly compare Vietnamese intonation and English intonation as well as&#13;
highlight some problems Vietnamese speakers are likely to have in learning English intonation due&#13;
to the differences between these two language intonations, and to offer some implications for&#13;
teaching English intonation to Vietnamese EFL learners.
