<title>River Bank Erosion in Central Vietnam</title>
<link>http://tainguyenso.vnu.edu.vn/jspui/handle/123456789/7701</link>
<description>River Bank Erosion in Central Vietnam
Tran, Tan Van
A few years ago (2000-2002) a research project entitled “Geohazards in coastal provinces of Central Vietnam (from Quang Binh to Phu Yen) - current status, causes, predictions and recommendation of mitigation measures” was conducted by Vietnam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (VIGMR). The problem of river bank erosion was surveyed and studied along 25 major rivers and their tributaries totaling more than 850km in length. In this paper, some special cases are highlighted, causes are presented and a method for determining river meanderness as an indicator of future bank erosion is proposed.

<title>Application of Reliability Analysis in Design of a River Dike</title>
<link>http://tainguyenso.vnu.edu.vn/jspui/handle/123456789/7699</link>
<description>Application of Reliability Analysis in Design of a River Dike
P. Q., Tu; T. M., Thu; K., Vrijling; P. H. A. J. M. Van, Gelder
The application of reliability analysis in civil engineering is still not very widely applied in geotechnical engineering in general and in application to river dikes, in particular. This paper focuses on the general framework of reliability analysis in geotechnical engineering design and an example for river dike reliability analysis is illustrated. Reliability analysis is related to some other terminology such as: risk assessment, probabilistic design etc. but they all deal with analyzing the relevant uncertain parameters. A river dike ring was examined as a series system with many dike sections which have similar characters (geometry, geotechnical condition, protection area and so on). Considering each dike reach, there are several failure mechanisms such as instability, under seepage, erosion, thus all of them contribute to the dike breach probability with different levels. Practically, an example for a Red river dike section analysis is shown with some reliability methods and the joint probability function for dike segments was formulated.

<description>Engineering Geological Problems During Implementating Deep Excavations in Hue City Area
Do, Quang Thien; Le, Thi Cat Tuong; Tran, Thi Phương An
With a view to realize the 48th conclusion of Political Bureau of the KPV on early construction and making Thua Thien - Hue to become a city directly under the central government, the expansion and speeding up urbanization of the province in general and planning the low and medium building with basement in the opinion of saving fund of land, preserving the city of tangible and intangible cultural heritage in particular have become current focus works of Thua Thien - Hue. Beauty of a tourist city is keft and maitained a sustainable development based on the harmonious combination between natural, environmental and economic - social conditions and long-term stability of the buildings. Therefore, this paper tries to indicate the engineering geological problems in implementing deep excavations in various types of the typical foundation structures widely distributed in Hue city.

<title>Land Subsidence Hazard due to Karts in Vietnam and Mitigation Measures</title>
<link>http://tainguyenso.vnu.edu.vn/jspui/handle/123456789/7687</link>
<description>Land Subsidence Hazard due to Karts in Vietnam and Mitigation Measures
Duong, Thi Toan; Vu, Cao Minh; Doan, Van Tuyen
In Vietnam karst caused land subsidence is serious problem, especially when it is occurring in limestone rocks covered by upper soil layer with the thickness of 30-40m. The deformation of the ground is dominantly resulted in colapsed depression or hole with circle shape on the ground surface. The diameters vary from 2 to 5m, reaching upto 5-10m in some places. Although funnel type of the subsidence is less common, it has widely impacting diameter. The main factors causing this type of hazard are the water table drawdown due to drought and groundwater overextraction, mining exploitation…. This paper studies the land subsidence hazard related to karst topography in some areas in Vietnam and suggests the preventive measures for reducing this type of disaster. The preventive solutions are relocating population from dangerous areas, strictly control the exploitation regulations and procedures, maintaining rational water use in the regions of karst topography. The question how to improve kart surveying is also disscused.
