Author: Nguyễn, Cử
Abstract: Avifauna of Vietnam is very rich (more than 9% in comparison with species composition of birds of the world). Vietnam is considerate as home of Lophura species in Indochina. Many species, especially endemic and migratory water birds are listed in the Red Data Books. Within 1975-1981, the first bird books of Vietnam were published by Professor Vo Quy who was the Director of CRES. In his books, total of 1,009 species and sub-species of birds of Vietnam were described. The number of birds of the country has been increasing after that time: there are 773 species in list in 1983 and then in total of 828 species which was published in A Checklist of Birds of Vietnam. Today the number of birds of Vietnam is 874 species that has been recorded in the whole country, among them included six new species and several new sub-species. There are 13 endemic species found in Vietnam. However, the number species are still unclear what and where they are. Those birds which were discovered need to futher study. Thus, in comparison with previous bird list, today a new added species is 46, among them, 24 species belong to Passeriformes, and 17 species added to Non- Passeriformes, that now increasing the number of birds of Vietnam into 874 species. In several field surveys, birds are used as key group or / indicators for identification of key sites for conservation in Vietnam such as BirdLife/ IEBR project which was carried out in the Mekong Delta (1998), or BirdLife/FIPI project in the Red River Delta (1996) etc. In Vietnam Central Lowland EBA, the Da Krong and Phong Dien nature reserves were established with total areas more than 80,000 ha that aim to Edwards Pheasant preservation.
