Abstract: Some public awareness programmes on biodiversity conservation were implemented in the buffer zones of Da Krong Nature Reserve (Quang Tri Province). Da Krong is a new member in Vietnam’s natural reserve system. Minority ethnic groups such as Pa Hi, Pa Ko, Van Kieu mostly survive on forest products. But they poorly understand the role and activities of biodiversity awareness and biodiversity and human wellbeing, etc... It is necessary to have a suitable and effective public awareness and communication method in these areas. The method introduced in this paper is a combination of many educational, scientific, ethnologic, socio and environmental elements. Photos and pictures are the main communication tools in the public awareness programme. These photos and pictures are used to show Van Kieu ethnic group’s real normal life (food, water, washing, population, marriage, funeral, loving, worship, cutting trees for rice/maize plant, fishing, shooting, cooking, wooden fuel, wooden house, graveyard, breeding, traditional medical trees…). All of these photos and pictures are pasted on large papers (showing several different topics) together with the environmental educator’s explanations. Some competitions and games are also used with prizes of small gifts (salt, sugar, seasoning powder…). SWOT analysis was used before developing a public awareness and communication programme. RRA tools were also used to assess the awareness impacts on the general Van Kieu public on biodiversity through the programme. The method is quite effective and suitable for minority ethnic groups in buffer zones of natural reserves.
