Open source software have made a big improvement in recent years. By attracting attention of software developer communities, open source software are getting more functionality and wider fields of application, and thus they become the direct rivals of commercial software.
The authors have conducted research on current state of application of open source software for developing land information system (LIS) in some countries, and experimentally developed a web-based LIS based on open source software including PostgreSQL, PostGIS, MS4W, CartoWeb, gvSIG.
The gained experiences show that open source software have suitable functionalities for developing a contemporary LIS with minimal investment and high level of tweaking possibilities. However, they do have a limited suite of tools for system development and usually are more bug-prone than commercial software.
The authors recommended the Government to finance a project on development of open source LIS in Vietnam in order to make system improvement easier by attracting participation of domestic and international software developer communities |
