This minor thesis was carried out with an attempt to investigate the current difficulties the teachers and the first year students are coping with in teaching and learning Reading comprehension in the course book "New Headway" (Pre-Intermediate) in the college of Broadcasting 1. The thesis is organized in 3 parts: First, the Introduction presents the rationale, aims and significance of the study, research questions, scope of the study and design of the study. The Development is divided into 3 chapters. It starts with some concepts of reading, especially reading comprehension. Then, important features about the course book used to study, the teaching staff and teaching methods, teaching facilities and current situation of students learning the course book are described. Next, the study was undertaken among English teachers and the first year students in the college of Broadcasting 1. On the basis of analysis of the data, the findings show that most of students are the lack of vocabulary and terminologies, the lack of appropriate reading method and the lack of understanding the purposes of reading meanwhile English teachers are coping with many difficulties in teaching such as: the lack of general knowledge, the lack of various teaching techniques, the lack of reference materials and teaching aids. Once difficulties have been found out, the appropriate suggestions for the improvement are suggested to overcome those difficulties including: training students to become efficient readers, encouraging students to have extensive reading habit, making students fully aware of their purpose of reading, improving teacher's knowledge, improving teachers' classroom techniques, equipping teaching facilities, and adapting materials. Finally, the Conclusion summaries the study and offers some suggestions for further study. |
