Abstract: The thesis was carried out to investigate the use of teachers’ instructions for group work in 2nd year non – English major classrooms at Thai Nguyen University. It sought the answers to the following questions: 1. 1. How instructions are used for group work in 2nd year non-English major classrooms at TNU? ; 2. 2. What facilitates and hinders the teachers when giving instructions for group work? ; 3. 3. What recommendations for improvement are needed to make instructions for group work more effective?. Classroom observations and survey questionnaires were employed to find answers to these three questions. The findings of the research revealed that the teachers’ proficiency and experiences could partly meet the demands for the success of instructions for group work applied in 2nd year non-English major classrooms at TNU. However, there were some problems that hindered the teachers in giving effective instructions. They are: students’ problems (low English proficiency, passive learning styles), teachers’ problems (heavy teaching load, lack of training, and limited teaching time) and classroom conditions’ problems such as class size, multi – level class and the lack of necessary facilities. It is hoped that the thesis will contribute to make teachers’ instructions for group work activities more successful in 2nd year non-English major classrooms.
