Abstract: In this paper we summarize the history and current state of astronomy in Vietnam. Future plans for the development of astronomy education and research in Vietnam are summarized and some avenues suggested. These include the construction of a planetarium in Hanoi, and the development of a curriculum for an undergraduate major and a Master's degree in astrophysics at some Universities, as well as the development and operation of an observatory in Hanoi. © 2007 International Astronomical Union.
