Abstract

Idioms have been a linguistic matter attracting a lot of attention of linguistic researchers and English learners. They are often used in life such as daily conversations and literature works. Idioms are concerned with a large number of matters in life. Without exception, words indicating numbers are also an issue idioms are related to. Numbers have quite high frequency of appearance in our communicative daily activities. Especially, numbers has also an important role in reflecting culture of a country. The study of idiomatic expressions containing numbers in English and Vietnamese is aimed at providing a comprehensive analysis of the role of numbers in creating the meanings of these idioms. The methods used in the study are quantitative and qualitative methods to collect and analyze the data from semantic books, books of idioms, dictionaries, literary works, newspapers and websites. The findings of the research might be useful for the researches in vocabulary in general and the studies in idioms in particular. At the same time, English learners and English teachers are likely to take advantage of these findings in their English learning and teaching so that their word choices in communicative daily contexts would be much more effective and appropriate. Furthermore, the study would help to reveal the differences in using of numbers in Vietnamese and English idiomatic expressions to some extent, which might be advantageous for the understanding of two cultures.
