Abstract: Motivation is a key factor to success of second language acquisition that teachers of EFL (English as a foreign language) have always tried to find out motivational strategies and techniques to motivate their students to learn. In an attempt to investigate students’ motivation and main factors affecting their motivation in learning reading, the case study was conducted with 65 grade-9 students and 2 teachers at Quang Dinh Lower Secondary School with data collected from the classroom observation, survey questionnaires and interview. The study focuses on 4 main issues: (1) types of motivation possessed by the grade-9 students at Quang Dinh Lower Secondary School, (2) main factors affecting students’ motivation in learning English reading, (3) motivational activities and techniques employed by the teachers in reading lessons as well as participants’ opinions on the reading materials and (4) suggestions for applying motivational strategies and techniques to improve students’ reading skills.
