dc.description.abstract Landslides are among the most frequent and devastating natural hazards. Human and material damages are significant. Social impact of landslides is frequently under evaluated. The situation calls for intensified actors in the form of preventive measures. The paper addresses three pillars neces¬sary for a proactive landslide risk mitigation: Pillar 1 advocates increased efforts in appropriate hazard and risk assessment, Pillar 2 focuses on optimum mitigation measures, and Pillar 3 highlights the importance of international collaboration efforts. Examples are given from a number of countries. vi
